Scotland

May 1999

I love Scotland.  I really love Scotland.  Scotland--especially the highlands--is gut-wrenchingly beautiful.  Katie and I thought it was so beautiful that we joked that its beauty almost made you throw up!  We stayed in Scotland for about 2 full days, and I wish we had been able to stay longer.  Luckily we were able to take a day trip to the highlands.  Edinburgh is really neat because it is modern, but it has kept its cobblestone streets, making you feel like you are back in the 16th century.  I don't have any pictures from this, but while we were there, Katie and I took a haunted vault tour.  Oh my God!  We have never been so scared in our lives!  I highly recommend taking a tour like that--if you have a strong stomach and strong nerves!

The entrance to Edinburgh Castle.  Edinburgh Castle is anchors one end of the Royal Mile and Holyrood House anchors the other end.  Edinburgh Castle is very old and very impressive.

And this is Holyrood House at the other end of the Royal Mile.  It's beautiful.  Mary, Queen of Scots' secretary was killed here, and you can actually see the blood stain on the floor.

Isn't he cute?  We encountered him on the Royal Mile.

Blccchhhhh!!  Isn't it beautiful!!  The highlands' weather changes quickly and often.  In the space of about 15 minutes it sleeted, rained, and cleared up.

Here Nessie....Loch Ness and no sign of Nessie!

This is Urquhart Castle (I know I butchered the spelling) in the highlands.  It's very old.  Gorgeous..and cold!!  It was very cold that day!
